AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES OF THE NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK

Nyungwe National Park, dominated by montane rainforest, supports a great diversity of species, many of which are endemics. The park's herpetological inventory remains incomplete, as evidenced by a steady stream of new discoveries. This book provides an overview of the research history of the area, from the earliest expeditions to the latest field surveys and summarizes all relevant literature. It presents an updated catalogue of the 34 species of amphibians and 50 species of reptiles recorded from the park. Of these, 59% of the amphibians and 34% of the reptiles are Albertine Rift endemics, with three of the amphibian species being locally endemic. Geographical distribution patterns and conservation status of each species are presented. The etymology of vernacular names and other colloquial terms and traditional forest-related knowledge are also discussed.
