3rd edition, Herne 2020, SC., 174 pages, numerous colour photos. Gerdes, from a family with a long beekeeping tradition, started his own beekeeping in 1978 at the suggestion of his father-in-law, who was also a passionate beekeeper. Carniolan honey bees, the most popular subspecies among beekepers at the time, were usually kept in trough hives. In 1990 Gerdes moved some of his colonies kept in Zander bee hives to plastic hives with 9 honeycombs per frame. As early as 1991 he became member of the “Buckfast Community.” In 1996 he took the opportunity to purchase 60 Dadant hives that were offered for sale due to an illness of their owner. Around the turn of the millennium Gerdes made numerous beekeeping study trips with interested colleagues to, among others, Sweden, South Tyrol, Poland, Norway, southern Germany, Romania, and Finland. By maintaining close contacts with Buckfast breeders and professional beekeepers, he was able to further improve his way of operating. In German.
