2nd revised and expanded edition, 2020, SC., 256 pages, 105 images, 29 tables and 48 colour plates. The adder is the only species of venomous snake in Germany found over much of the country. Until the mid-20th century adders were intensively persecuted and killed, with blood money paid for their extermination. Today, they are threatened by extinction and in need of conservation action. Almost 20 years have passed since the publication of the first edition of this book. Even though references were quite numerous already, a substantial amount of papers was published in the meantime, further expanding our knowledge about the habits of these venomous snakes. During the last 20 years, a great many field studies were conducted on adders also in Germany, including some long-term investigations. Two of the authors (Daniel Bohle and Norbert Otte) extensively studied some adder populations in Brandenburg for almost all this time. However, relatively few of their results and experiences have been made available to the public so far, i.e. this edition not only references about 150 new publications but contains an array of original data, too. In German.
