With 6 coloured lithographic plates and explanations, one map. Finsch was born in 1839 in Silesia. His father owned a glass grinding workshop and directed a drawing school. Although destined to become a merchant, Finsch aborted his studies and embarked at the age of 19 on his first field trip to observe birds in Bulgaria and Hungary. In 1861 he was hired by the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (today Naturalis) in Leiden, the Netherlands as an assistant.
