In this publication on the fish fauna of the Yellow River, the author describes more than 170 fish species native to China's "mother river" and its tributaries. Historical investigations dating back to ancient times, as well as influences of geological history and human activities on the fish fauna of the region, are also documented or outlined. The author had been one of the best-known and most active ichthyologists in China since the founding of the People's Republic of China. His book, "Studies on zoogeographical divisions for freshwater fishes of China", has been widely cited by ichthyologists and fishery scientists in studying of freshwater fishes in China. He was the major author of several volumes of the "Fauna Sinica" monograph series, systematically reviewing and describing bony fishes that include flat fish, cod, silverside, pearlfish, killifish, flying fish, etc. in China waters, and had been responsible for translating Joseph S. Nelson's "Fishes of the World" (2nd ed.) into Chinese. The author himself grew up from humble background of a peasant family in the early part of the 20th century. Between late 1950s and mid-1970s, he had been victimized by political campaigns in China. A short autobiography of the author is included in the last part of this book. Chinesisch mit lat. Namen.
